Celebrating the Comfort Crew on National Therapy Animal Day

Two students lie on the floor of a classroom working on worksheets with pencils, while a chocolate Labrador Retriever wearing a pink collar rests on a cushion beside them, appearing to observe their work. The cozy classroom setting suggests the dog may be a therapy or reading companion animal.

National Therapy Animal Day, celebrated annually on April 30, recognizes and honors therapy animals and their human companions who partner together to bring comfort and healing to those in need. Established by Pet Partners, this day shines a light on the powerful role animals play in supporting human health and well-being across hospitals, pediatric care units, schools, assisted living facilities, and more.

In the Berkley School District, we recognize and celebrate the Comfort Crew and their devoted handlers who help nurture the well-being of our students and staff. The Comfort Crew dogs work in our schools as part of the District’s emotional health and wellness initiatives. Our dogs spend time with students observing lessons, attending concerts, carefully watching experiments, being read to, providing comfort during tough times and more.

The furry friends belong to staff members in the District and have been highly trained. The dogs have passed the Canine Good Citizen course and the Advanced Canine Good Citizen course.

Cheers to Beatrice, Bleu, Cocoa, Hazel, Korra, Parker, Samson, Winnie and Yuki. We also remember Millie, who served on the Comfort Crew team but is no longer with us.
