Norup Hosts First Elementary Art Show

Norup art teacher Kristen Gustafson hosted an elementary art show for the first time on Thursday, April 9. Her goal for the event was for students to build confidence, have ownership over their work and to be proud of the art they made.

To determine what pieces to showcase, students looked through their portfolios and chose their favorite piece. Mrs. Gustafson shared, “My favorite comment during this process was when a Kindergartner was looking through their work and said, ‘It's hard to pick; they're all so good.’” If students were having a hard time deciding on their selection, they were asked to choose from what they were most proud of, what they learned the most from or what challenged them.

Each elementary student had artwork on display. In addition to individual works, grades 3-5 created a collaborative "quilt," and learned the history and culture of the Gee's Bend quilters as part of the project.

Students explored different media and techniques while learning about artists, cultures and traditions along the way.
